How we rate moviesIn this article
This busted water pipes review starts with a simple question: can a good premise survive a messy script? Busted Water Pipes is a 2026 Chinese action-comedy directed by Difei Zhou, and it leads with a very funny idea. The execution is much less tidy.
The film stars Eddie Peng and arrives with mixed notices. It is watchable and often silly, but it rarely settles down long enough to land its best jokes.
Busted Water Pipes Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)
The busted water pipes plot begins in a small town where the police have done their job too well. Crime has stayed at zero for years, and the team led by Yu Dahai (Eddie Peng) now faces cuts. Their solution is absurd: fabricate a case to prove they are still needed.
Then the station's water pipe bursts. Three men turn up to fix it, namely Luo Siji, Luo Hao and Niu Dalun, and they are posing as plumbers. In truth, they are tomb raiders. The film's hook is what happens when cops and crooks are forced into the same cramped space.
That setup mixes crime-caper beats with slapstick, which suits the film's tone. I won't say where it goes after the opening act, because the fun lies in watching the two sides collide.
What Works in Busted Water Pipes
The central idea is the film's best asset. Police who invent a crime and thieves who pose as repairmen make a neat comic pairing. It gives the director plenty of room for mistaken identities and awkward standoffs.
The action-comedy mix also has its moments:
Physical comedy: Several set pieces lean on slapstick, and the cast clearly enjoys them.
Eddie Peng's presence: One audience reviewer on Rotten Tomatoes said he "still got his moves," and that fits.
Brisk length: At 103 minutes, it moves along and rarely drags.
If you like crime caper stories, the film also fits alongside A Better Jianghu, another Chinese heist comedy from this year, though it is a looser and sillier ride.
Busted Water Pipes Cast and Performances
The Busted Water Pipes cast is led by Eddie Peng as Yu Dahai, the police leader trying to save his team. Peng brings a deadpan energy and some physical skill, and he anchors the film better than the script does.
The supporting players include:
Allen/Lun Ai as Luo Siji
Zhou You as Luo Hao
Yan Peilun as Niu Dalun
Yang Haoyu as Old Ge
Jiang Xueming as Xiao Ma
The performances are broad, as you would expect in a farce. Some critics found the acting too loud, and Culture Mix's Carla Hay said it has "a lot of bad acting." I found the chemistry between the cops and the fake plumbers the most appealing part, even when individual gags fell flat.
Where Busted Water Pipes Stumbles
The main problem is the screenplay. Sino-Cinema called it a watchable crime caper with an over-stuffed plot, and that is accurate. The film keeps adding characters and twists, and the story becomes more convoluted than a comedy of this kind needs.
Tone is another issue. The film switches between action, crime and farce without a steady rhythm, so jokes sometimes arrive just as a scene tries to build tension. Culture Mix said the results are "more maddening than madcap," which is harsher than my view but not unfair.
Critical coverage is thin, and aggregate scores sit in the middling range. IMDb shows 5.4/10, which suggests many viewers shared my mixed feelings.
Is Busted Water Pipes Worth Watching?
It is worth watching if you are a fan of Chinese action-comedy and can forgive a cluttered script. The premise is fun, Eddie Peng is likable, and the pace keeps things moving. Nobody should expect a sharp, tightly built comedy.
The Busted Water Pipes release date was 23 January 2026 in China, with a limited North American theatrical run via China Lion starting 30 January 2026. If you want similar heist-flavoured fun, Masterplan is a good companion. You can also browse more comedy movie reviews on FilmKini. For full credits, see the IMDb page for Busted Water Pipes.
