This Kill Code review starts with a simple pitch: a cyberpunk action thriller with a recognizable cast and a deadly game at its centre. Writer-director Justin Price wants to blend survival thrills with rebellion, but critics have not been kind to the result. Here is what the film offers and where it falls short.

Kill Code Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)

The Kill Code plot is set in a future buckling under heavy crime. A greedy corporation hands out lethal watches to criminals and tells them the only way to earn freedom is to kill each other. It is a familiar "deadly game" setup, close in spirit to many dystopian action stories.

The twist in the premise is that one of the wearers refuses to play along. This character plans to dismantle the system from within, which sets survival against rebellion. That is as far as we will go, since the first act is all the setup you need.

The film was previously known as Hard Matter before it took its final title. It is an American production, in English, and runs roughly 87 minutes by the most commonly listed figure, so it moves briskly.

What Works in Kill Code

The film's strongest asset is its concept. A countdown device strapped to your wrist is an easy hook, and it gives the action a clear structure and obvious stakes.

Some viewers also responded to the look and mood. One audience reviewer called the cyberpunk vibe fun and said the action kept things moving, while a TMDB reviewer said it has the aesthetics of a decent cyberpunk film. Another viewer singled out the music.

The short running time helps too. If you like lean genre fare, there is little time to get bored. Fans of action movie reviews will recognise the appeal of a simple, propulsive setup.

Kill Code Cast and Performances

The Kill Code cast is the main draw for many viewers. Harvey Keitel plays Eion, Frank Grillo plays Benjamin, and Tyrese Gibson plays Lukas. Franzi Schissler appears as Elera and Jacob Artist as Kyron, while Peter Stormare rounds out the lead names. Apple TV lists his character as "King", though that is unverified.

Name value alone does not guarantee strong material. Reviews I found suggest the script gives these actors little that is fresh to work with, and one critic said the film never finds its own voice. Veterans like Keitel and Grillo can add presence, but they cannot fully rescue thin characters.

Where Kill Code Stumbles

The harshest reviews focus on originality. Under the Radar's Scott Howard gave the film 1 out of 10 and called it a facetious cyberpunk thriller steeped in a mishmash of clichés. Common Sense Media's Alistair Lawrence gave it 1 out of 5, and Cinemalogue's Todd Jorgenson called it an intermittently laughable snoozer.

The visuals are another sore point. Some audience reviewers criticised the effects, and one claimed the imagery relied on generative AI. That is an audience opinion, not a confirmed fact, but it shows the film's look divides viewers.

There is also a mismatch in the scores. Rotten Tomatoes shows a 90% Tomatometer, but from only four reviews, so that number is not reliable. The more detailed critic write-ups I found are largely negative.

Is Kill Code Worth Watching?

Kill Code is worth watching only if you are a die-hard fan of low-budget cyberpunk action and its cast. Most critics found it derivative and unconvincing, so expectations should stay modest.

The premise is solid and the pacing is quick, which may be enough for a casual night in. But if you want sharp world-building, original ideas or polished effects, you will likely come away disappointed. Those who prefer smarter dystopian stories might browse our sci-fi movie reviews instead.

Who Will Enjoy Kill Code

  • Fans of Frank Grillo, Harvey Keitel or Tyrese Gibson who will watch them in anything.

  • Viewers who enjoy deadly-game, dystopian action premises and do not mind well-worn tropes.

  • Anyone after a short, undemanding action thriller with a neon-tinged cyberpunk look.

Pros

  • Clear, high-stakes deadly-watch premise
  • Recognisable cast including Keitel, Grillo and Gibson
  • Short runtime keeps the pace moving

Cons

  • Leans heavily on genre clichés
  • Effects and visuals draw criticism
  • Critics say it lacks its own voice

Our Verdict

Kill Code has a tidy hook and a notable cast, but critics found it derivative and uneven. It is best saved for genre completists.
