This Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War review starts with a simple question: does a series favourite work as a standalone feature? John Krasinski returns as the analyst-turned-field-operative, this time in a 2026 film that lands on Prime Video. The answer is mixed, but there is fun to be had.

Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan: Ghost War Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)

The film continues the Prime Video series Jack Ryan. The plot kicks off when an international covert mission goes wrong and exposes a deadly conspiracy. Ryan teams up with CIA allies and an MI6 officer to chase down the people behind it.

Their enemy is a rogue black-ops unit, and it has studied their methods closely. That gives the story a cat-and-mouse feel, where every plan risks being a step behind. It is classic Clancy territory: shadowy agencies, split loyalties and a clock that never stops ticking.

The film is a mix of action and drama, with a thriller streak running through it. Andrew Bernstein directs, and Krasinski co-wrote the screenplay with Aaron Rabin.

What Works in Ghost War

Krasinski is the film's anchor. He plays Ryan as a decent, stubborn man who keeps getting pushed into danger, and that makes the audience care whether he gets out. One critic at the San Jose Mercury News said it left him hoping for another standalone Ryan film.

The action is plentiful, and fans of the series will feel at home. Viewers on Letterboxd and Amazon's own listing single out the set pieces and the ensemble. At roughly 105 to 107 minutes, depending on the listing, it also moves briskly and does not overstay its welcome.

The returning team dynamic helps too. Seeing Ryan lean on trusted colleagues gives the film a lived-in warmth that a fresh cast would struggle to build.

Ghost War Cast and Performances

The Ghost War cast is led by John Krasinski as Jack Ryan. Wendell Pierce returns as James Greer, and Michael Kelly plays Mike November. Sienna Miller joins as Emma Marlow, the MI6 side of the equation.

Max Beesley (Liam Crown) and Betty Gabriel (Elizabeth Wright) round out the main players, though sources differ on some character names.

Chemistry over character

The actors get along well, and the banter between Krasinski and Pierce feels earned. Miller brings a sharp edge to the newcomer role. The problem is that the script gives few of them much to chew on beyond functional dialogue.

Where Ghost War Stumbles

Critical reception has been cool. Rotten Tomatoes lists a 39% score from 51 reviews, and the Metascore sits at 38. IMDb users are kinder at 5.7 out of 10.

The most common complaint is thin writing. The Hollywood Reporter's Frank Scheck argued that Krasinski seems uninterested in character development or meaningful dialogue. Brian Lowry of Status News gave it 5/10 and called it a too-conventional spy yarn despite abundant action.

The direction also draws fire. InSession Film's Maxance Vincent graded it D+, faulting the staging and editing of the action scenes. If you want inventive choreography, expect to be underwhelmed.

It may also feel like an extended episode rather than a true film. If you have never watched the show, the emotional stakes will land softer.

Is Ghost War Worth Watching?

Yes, if you already like Jack Ryan and want a comfortable, action-heavy night in. It delivers the expected espionage beats and a likeable lead, but not much surprise. So, is Ghost War worth watching for newcomers? Probably only if you enjoy straightforward spy thrillers.

It streams on Prime Video from the film's release date of May 20, 2026, and you can find it through the Prime Video page. It is rated R for violence and language. Overall, this is competent, forgettable entertainment. It rarely thrills, but it rarely bores.

Our Verdict
