This Aaryan review starts with the film's best asset: a premise you can explain in one line and want to see play out. A struggling writer announces a perfect crime, and the police must stop him before he strikes. Directed by Praveen K., this Tamil crime thriller opened on 31 October 2025 to mixed reviews.

Aaryan Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)

The Aaryan plot is built on a bold challenge. A down-on-his-luck writer publicly declares that he will carry out a flawless crime, and he has planned every step with care. The police now have to work out what he intends before the bodies start piling up.

It is a cat-and-mouse setup, and the opening act sells it well. The tension comes from the announcement itself: the authorities know a killer is coming, but not where or how. The film is an adaptation of the 2019 Malayalam web series Menaka, which Praveen also co-wrote and directed.

If you like your crime stories with a ticking clock, the early stretch delivers. For more in this vein, browse our Crime movie reviews or our Action movie reviews.

What Works in Aaryan

The hook is the film's strongest card. Critics at The Hindu opened on the premise, and it is easy to see why: a criminal who tells you his plan is a fun inversion of the usual whodunit.

The first act also builds a decent sense of pressure. You want to stay with it to see how the police respond, and the Hollywood Reporter India noted there is enough going on to keep you in your seat until the climax.

  • A clear, high-concept setup that grabs attention quickly.

  • Strong lead performances, a point many reviewers agreed on.

  • A 134-minute runtime that stays manageable, even when the pacing wobbles.

Aaryan Cast and Performances

The Aaryan cast is led by Vishnu Vishal as Arivudai Nambi, the figure at the heart of the chase. He anchors the film with a committed, steady turn, and it is the kind of grounded work that keeps weaker scenes watchable.

Selvaraghavan plays Alagar "Narayanan", and his performance drew praise from several critics alongside Vishal's. Shraddha Srinath appears as Nayana, with Maanasa Chaudhary as Anitha and Avinash as Ravi Chakrapani rounding out the main players. Jayakumar is also in the cast.

The actors do more than the script gives them. Reviews that criticised the film still tended to single out the performances as a plus.

Where Aaryan Stumbles

The trouble starts around the midpoint. Several reviewers said the film loses momentum, and the screenplay flaws and pacing issues become hard to ignore. A premise this sharp needs escalating surprises, and the middle stretch does not always supply them.

The writing is the main target. Indian Express gave the film 2/5 and called the writing perfunctory, while Pinkvilla also gave it 2/5, saying it shows potential but ultimately unravels. You can read that outlet's take in its Aaryan movie review.

Some critics also compared it unfavourably with Ratsasan, a high bar for any Tamil serial-killer thriller. Audience scores are modest too: IMDb sits at 6.3/10 and TMDB at 5.4/10 from a small number of votes.

Is Aaryan Worth Watching?

Yes, if you are a fan of Tamil crime thrillers and can forgive a baggy middle. Aaryan is worth watching for its premise and for Vishnu Vishal and Selvaraghavan, but it is not the tight, clever thriller the setup promises.

Critics landed in mixed territory, and that feels fair. The Aaryan release date was 31 October 2025, and the film plays fine as a one-time watch when you want a straightforward chase with a hook. Just keep your expectations measured, and if you want something stronger in the genre, our Thriller movie reviews are a good place to look.

Who Will Enjoy Aaryan

  • Fans of Tamil crime thrillers who enjoy a cat-and-mouse setup.

  • Viewers who follow Vishnu Vishal or Selvaraghavan and want to see them in a tense drama.

  • Anyone curious about the story's roots in the Malayalam series Menaka. See the Aaryan Wikipedia page) for more background.

Pros

  • High-concept premise that hooks you quickly
  • Vishnu Vishal and Selvaraghavan give strong performances
  • Tense, watchable first act

Cons

  • Momentum drops noticeably in the middle
  • Screenplay feels thin and perfunctory
  • Falls short of Ratsasan-level thrills

Our Verdict

Aaryan has a killer premise and committed lead performances, but a sagging middle and a thin screenplay stop it from landing the perfect crime. It is a decent one-time watch for genre fans.
