This Altered review starts with a simple point: the film has a sharper idea than its budget can fully support. Timo Vuorensola directs and writes this 85-minute sci-fi action film, with Tom Felton in the lead. It is a modest, uneven genre piece, but it has some ideas worth chewing on.

Altered Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)

The Altered plot is set in an alternate present where genetically enhanced humans hold power. Everyone else is pushed to the edges of society. Leon (Tom Felton) is one of those outcasts, and he shares a close bond with Chloe, who is an adopted daughter figure to him.

The pair end up challenging corrupt politicians who profit from the gap between the enhanced and the unenhanced. The tagline, "Fight the system. Change the world," sums up the pitch. I won't go beyond that setup, because the film's strengths lie in its first act and its world.

What Works in Altered

The best thing here is the premise. A dystopia built on genetic inequality is not new, but making the hero a flawed, far-from-heroic man gives it a different flavour. Leon is not a chosen one, and that helps the film feel a little less formulaic.

  • World-building: the dystopian setting is crafted with care, especially given the budget.

  • Heart: the relationship between Leon and Chloe gives the story an emotional anchor.

  • Pace: at 85 minutes, the film never overstays its welcome.

If you like your sci-fi movie reviews to favour ideas over spectacle, there is something to appreciate here. The backstory is at least partly original, and it gives the political angle some bite.

Altered Cast and Performances

The Altered cast is led by Tom Felton as Leon. Felton plays against his usual image and leans into a weary, rough-edged character. He is believable as someone who has been worn down by the system and keeps going anyway.

Elizaveta Bugulova plays Chloe, and the chemistry between the two is the film's most dependable asset. Aggy K. Adams appears as Mira, and Richard Brake brings his familiar menace to Frank Kessler. Brake is always worth watching, though the material does not give him much room. Igor Jijikine and Aleksey Filimonov (as Cook) round out the supporting players.

Where Altered Stumbles

The main problem is focus. The script has several ideas about power, class and genetics, but it does not always tie them together. Scenes can feel rushed or underdeveloped, and the political plot never quite lands with the force the setup promises.

The action is the other weak spot. Fight scenes can look clumsy, and the choreography and editing lack polish. With an estimated budget of $15 million, the film clearly stretched its resources, and it shows. Anyone expecting the slick set pieces of a big-studio action movie will be let down.

Is Altered Worth Watching?

Altered is worth a look if your expectations are modest. It is a flawed but sincere low-budget dystopia with a likeable central pair and an interesting idea. Audience reaction has been mixed, with a TMDB user score of 5.5 out of 10, and that feels fair.

The Altered release date was 18 September 2025, and it carries a PG-13 rating. It is not a film to rush out for, but it is a decent pick for a quiet evening. For more background on the production, see the Altered page on IMDb.

If the film leaves you wanting a tighter genre piece, you might also enjoy Delivery Run for another small-scale chase thriller, though check the site for the exact review.

Who Will Enjoy Altered

  • Fans of low-budget dystopian sci-fi who care more about ideas than polish.

  • Viewers who like Tom Felton and want to see him in a grittier role.

  • Anyone after a short, easy-to-watch action film with a political edge.

Pros

  • Interesting eugenics-based dystopian premise
  • Tom Felton plays against type
  • Likeable bond between Leon and Chloe
  • Tight 85-minute runtime

Cons

  • Unfocused script
  • Clumsy action scenes
  • Budget limits show

Our Verdict

Altered has a smart, timely idea and a likeable lead pair, but a loose script and rough action keep it from delivering. It is a modest watch rather than a standout.
