This Bad Man review starts with a simple question: can a goofy small-town cop spoof carry a whole movie? Michael Diliberti's debut feature gives Seann William Scott a juicy role and plenty of room to misbehave. The result is loose, crude and often funny, though it never grows into more than a rowdy hangout.

Bad Man Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)

The Bad Man plot is set in Colt Lake, Tennessee, a sleepy town where the local police handle little more than minor nuisances. Deputy Sam Evans knows everyone, and he is determined to deal with a meth epidemic creeping through the community. Then Bobby Gaines turns up as an undercover agent, and the town quickly treats him like a hero.

Sam gets pushed aside in his own backyard. As he watches Gaines charm the locals, he begins to suspect that the story is more tangled than it looks. That setup drives the first act, and it is a smart hook for a comedy about jealousy, ego and misplaced trust.

The film is described as loosely based on true events. That gives the silliness a thin layer of real-world grit, though the tone stays firmly comic. It is a mix of action and comedy, not a serious crime drama.

What Works in Bad Man

The best thing here is the anarchic energy. Diliberti, who also co-wrote the script with JJ Nelson, leans into the idea of a town full of lovable yokels with badges. If you grew up on Police Academy-style spoofs, the tone will feel familiar and oddly comforting.

  • Punchy jokes: the dialogue moves fast, and enough lines land to keep the mood light.

  • A cartoonish world: the rural setting is played for laughs, with a gang of cops who seem unready for anything serious.

  • Short running time: at 98 minutes, the film rarely overstays its welcome.

The humour is crude and unapologetic. Some gags are daft, a few are inspired, and the film seems happiest when it lets a scene spiral out of control. For fans of loud comedy, that chaos is the main draw.

Bad Man Cast and Performances

The Bad Man cast is led by Seann William Scott as Bobby Gaines. He plays the role with a mischievous grin and a hint of menace, and it suits him well. Scott has always been good at charming and irritating an audience in the same breath, and this part uses that gift.

Johnny Simmons plays Deputy Sam Evans, the earnest local who feels his town slipping away. He makes a fine straight man, and his frustration supplies much of the story's heart. Rob Riggle appears as Chief Sandy, and he brings the kind of bluster you would expect.

Lovi Poe plays Izzy, Chance Perdomo is DJ and Ethan Suplee is Dog Downer. The supporting players add colour, though several characters feel more like jokes than people. The ensemble works best in small bursts.

Where Bad Man Stumbles

The film is stronger in individual scenes than as a whole. Once the mystery around Gaines starts to build, the script has trouble balancing laughs with intrigue. The comedy keeps interrupting the tension, and the tension never gets enough room to matter.

Some jokes also repeat the same note. Rural stereotypes can be funny, but they wear thin when the movie leans on them for every other scene. A couple of supporting characters barely register beyond their gimmick.

As a debut, it also feels uneven. The action is modest, and the visual style rarely stands out. It looks like a scrappy comedy, which is fine, but it keeps the film from feeling like an event.

Is Bad Man Worth Watching?

Bad Man is worth watching if you want an undemanding, rowdy comedy and you like Seann William Scott. It is not a must-see, and its 5.6/10 audience-style score feels about right. The jokes are hit and miss, and the plot is more of a framework than a puzzle.

What you get is a quick, silly evening with a lead actor clearly enjoying himself. Viewers hoping for sharp crime storytelling or big set pieces may feel let down. Treat it as a lightweight comedy and it plays much better.

The Bad Man release date was 5 September 2025, and the film is rated NR. You can read more background on the film's IMDb page.
