Is Detective Dee: The Other Shore Flower Worth Watching? Our Review

This Detective Dee: The Other Shore Flower review looks at the latest outing for China's famous imperial sleuth. Directed by Fang Yinghua, the 2025 film mixes palace intrigue, a deadly elixir and eerie supernatural events. It is an action-horror hybrid in a long-running franchise, and critics have not yet weighed in.

Detective Dee: The Other Shore Flower Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)

The Detective Dee: The Other Shore Flower plot unfolds in the Tang-era capital. Judge Dee, played by Benny Chan Ho-Man, is pulled into a case tied to a lethal elixir and a run of unexplained, supernatural occurrences. The mystery quickly looks like more than a simple poisoning.

The setup follows the classic Dee formula: an odd crime, a ticking clock and a detective who trusts logic when everyone else whispers about ghosts. I will leave the larger conspiracy for you to discover, since the first act is where the film plants its hooks.

The film's original Chinese title is 狄仁杰之彼岸奇花. Some sources use different English titles, so be aware of that when searching. For background, TMDB's listing for the film is the most complete English-language page I could find.

What Works in Detective Dee: The Other Shore Flower

The premise is the strongest card. A deadly elixir is a natural fit for a Tang-dynasty mystery, and it gives the story a clear object of fear that the characters can chase. The supernatural angle adds a horror edge that sets the film apart from straight detective tales.

The genre blend is also appealing:

• Mystery with menace: the investigation is framed as both a puzzle and a threat.

• Period setting: the Tang capital offers a rich backdrop of courts, officials and secrets.

• Franchise comfort: Dee's reputation as a rational mind in irrational situations is an easy hook for newcomers.

If you enjoy action movie reviews built around martial spectacle and period flair, the film's concept should sit comfortably in your wheelhouse.

Detective Dee: The Other Shore Flower Cast and Performances

The Detective Dee: The Other Shore Flower cast is led by Benny Chan Ho-Man as Di Renjie, the title detective. Shang Na plays Shangguan Jinger, and Jin Ning appears as Liu Yue'er. Liu Jin is Lu Yingjie, Cui Dongchen is Li Jizong, and Yue Xunyu is Gao Neishi.

A caution on the credits: one Baidu page lists different lead names for this title, and I could not reconcile that with TMDB and Moviefone. The names above come from the latter sources.

Because no critic reviews are available, I cannot responsibly grade individual performances in detail. What the material does suggest is an ensemble built around the detective and the court figures who surround him, a structure the franchise has long relied on.

Where Detective Dee: The Other Shore Flower Stumbles

The biggest problem is a lack of information. No critical consensus, aggregate score or runtime has been published that I could find. TMDB shows a single user rating, which is far too small to mean anything.

There are also reasons to temper expectations on structure. Elixir-and-conspiracy plots can feel familiar, and the series has set a high bar for visual imagination. A film that blends mystery, action and horror risks doing all three at a moderate level rather than one at a high level.

Fans of the genre could also find the court-politics angle well-worn. Whether the film finds a fresh way into it is something viewers will have to judge for themselves.

Is Detective Dee: The Other Shore Flower Worth Watching?

It is worth a look if you already love the Detective Dee franchise or Chinese period mysteries, but go in with measured expectations. The premise is solid and the genre mix is inviting, yet there is no critical backing to confirm that it delivers.

The Detective Dee: The Other Shore Flower release date is listed as 15 December 2025 for China. I found no confirmed US date and no verified information on where to watch it, so check local listings. If you like your detective stories with a chill of the uncanny, the film from Fang Yinghua is a reasonable bet. For something with a stronger crime focus, browse our crime movie reviews.
