How we rate moviesIn this article
This Diesel review looks at a Tamil action drama that picks one of the more unusual backdrops in recent Indian cinema: the crude oil black market of Chennai. Director Shanmugam Muthusamy has a promising idea and a committed lead in Harish Kalyan. The question is whether the script can keep up with them.
Diesel Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)
The Diesel plot unfolds in the 1980s, in a city where oil smuggling is big business. Manoharan, played by Sai Kumar, is a leader in that trade. Pathan, played by Sachin Khedekar, dreams of building a private port that would become a hub for black market fuel.
At the centre is Vasu, a young man raised by an oil smuggler, who is pulled into this world. Corrupt officials and rival gangs circle the business, and the fishing community is caught up in the oil theft. That setup gives the film plenty of tension before the main conflict even begins.
The film is a mix of action and drama, and it leans on revenge-flavoured storytelling that fans of the genre will recognise.
What Works in Diesel
The setting is the film's best asset. Pipelines, harbours and smuggling routes are not the usual playground for a Tamil action hero, and the idea feels fresher than another standard gangster saga. Critics who were otherwise harsh on the film said it had an explosive premise.
The technical side also earns some praise. The Federal noted that the film's technical elements shine in parts, and that fits the overall impression: there are sequences with real polish and energy.
A distinctive 1980s oil-smuggling world
A hero with real emotional stakes
Moments of strong technical craft
The soundtrack includes the song "Aaruyire", with lyrics by Mohan Rajan, which adds some softer texture to a noisy film.
Diesel Cast and Performances
The Diesel cast is led by Harish Kalyan as Vasu, nicknamed "Diesel". The Hindu called the film a forgettable outing for him but still credited his effort, and that sums up the performance well. He works hard to carry the film, even when the writing gives him little to grab.
Vinay Rai plays DCP Mayavel, a police officer in the middle of the oil war. Athulya Ravi appears as Pavurni, and Vivek Prasanna plays Balamurugan. Sai Kumar and Sachin Khedekar bring veteran weight as the two powerful figures behind the trade.
Not every critic agreed on the lead. Bigtvlive wrote that Harish Kalyan does not shine in this role, so expect a split on how well the star fits the rough, heavy material.
Where Diesel Stumbles
The main problem is the script. The Federal described the film as a formulaic revenge drama let down by its writing, and India Today gave it 1.5 out of 5, saying it wasted an explosive premise. Those complaints are fair: the idea promises more than the story delivers.
At around two and a half hours, the film also feels long. IMDb lists the runtime as 144 minutes, and a thin plot stretched over that length tests patience. The familiar beats of revenge, betrayal and gang rivalry arrive without many surprises.
Audience numbers are modest too. IMDb shows 5.3 out of 10 from about 1,300 ratings, which points to a lukewarm response rather than a hit.
Is Diesel Worth Watching?
Diesel is worth watching only if the oil-mafia setting and Harish Kalyan's action turn already appeal to you. It is a flawed film with a good idea, not a must-see. Most critics were negative, and the story rarely rises above the formula.
The Diesel release date was 17 October 2025, and the film is in Tamil. If you want a deeper look at the cast and crew, the film's IMDb page is a good place to start. Go in with measured expectations and you may find enough to enjoy.
Who Will Enjoy Diesel
