Driver's Ed (2026) Review: Teen Road Trip Shifts Into Gear

This Driver's Ed review looks at a teen road comedy that mixes romance, mischief and a little action. Bobby Farrelly directs a script by Thomas Moffett, and the pitch is simple enough to fit on a bumper sticker. It is a stolen school car, a broken heart and a deadline.

The film arrives on 2026-05-14 with an R rating and a 102-minute runtime. It aims for easy laughs and a warm center, and it mostly gets there.

Driver's Ed Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)

The Driver's Ed plot starts with Jeremy, a high school senior who can't stop thinking about his girlfriend Evie. She has moved on to college as a freshman, and he fears he is losing her. Instead of waiting for a text, he decides to chase her down.

He doesn't go alone. A small group of teens helps him take the school's driver's ed car and hit the road. The clock is ticking, and the trip becomes a string of detours, bad decisions and awkward encounters.

The tagline, "Follow your heart... and the rules of the road," sums up the joke. The car is built for cautious learners, and the mission is anything but cautious.

What Works in Driver's Ed

The premise is the film's best asset. A dual-control school car is a funny vehicle for a getaway, and the movie knows it. The story keeps its goal clear, so every detour feels like a real obstacle rather than filler.

Farrelly has a long history with broad, good-natured comedy, and that shows here. The humor leans on awkward situations and character clashes more than on cruelty. For fans of comedy movie reviews, that tone will feel familiar and welcoming.

The movie also has a pleasing sense of momentum. At 102 minutes, it moves along without overstaying its welcome. The action beats are light, but they give the road trip a bit of kick.

Driver's Ed Cast and Performances

The Driver's Ed cast is built around a young ensemble, with adult comic actors in support.

• Sam Nivola plays Jeremy, the heartsick senior at the center of the trip.

• Sophie Telegadis plays Evie, the girlfriend he hopes to reach.

• Mohana Krishnan plays Aparna and Aidan Laprete plays Yoshi, two of the friends along for the ride.

• Kumail Nanjiani plays Mr. Rivers, and Molly Shannon plays Principal Fisher.

Nivola gives the story a likable, slightly panicked heart. He makes Jeremy's mission feel sincere even when it is ridiculous. The friend group adds a lively mix of personalities, which keeps the car interesting.

Nanjiani and Shannon bring seasoned comic timing to the school-side characters. Their presence gives the film an extra spark whenever the adults enter the picture.

Where Driver's Ed Stumbles

A road-trip comedy lives or dies on its episodes, and not all of them land equally. Some gags feel like standard teen-comedy fare, and viewers who have seen a few of these films may spot the shape of a scene before it plays out.

The romantic goal is sweet, but it is also fairly simple. The film doesn't have much appetite for surprise, so the pleasure comes from the company rather than from fresh ideas. The action is also modest, so anyone expecting big stunts may leave wanting more. Fans of action movie reviews should treat this as a comedy first.

With an R rating, the humor can be crude, though the film's heart stays gentle.

Is Driver's Ed Worth Watching?

Yes, Driver's Ed is worth watching if you want a breezy, good-natured teen comedy with a clear goal and a likable cast. It is not reinventing the genre, but it knows what it wants to be and delivers it with energy.

Audience reaction so far is positive, with a TMDB score of 6.9/10 from 99 votes. That matches our view: a fun, lightweight ride that is better with friends than alone. If you also like offbeat genre mixes, our review of Seek offers a very different kind of action fun.
