Hunting Season Review: Mel Gibson's Gritty Wilderness Thriller

This Hunting Season review starts with a simple promise: a lean, 100-minute action thriller that gets to the point. Raja Collins directs Mel Gibson as a loner who wants nothing to do with the world, until the world floats down his river. It is a modest film, but it knows what it wants to be.

Hunting Season Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)

The Hunting Season plot is easy to follow. Bowdrie, a survivalist who lives far from other people, shares his remote life with his daughter, Tag. One day they find a wounded woman in the river and pull her to safety.

She is mysterious, and she is clearly running from something. Before long, the pair are caught in a web of violence and revenge. The film's tagline, "It takes an awful lot to kill a person," sets the tone well.

Adam Hampton's script keeps the setup tight. We learn who these people are through what they do, not through long speeches. That economy suits the genre.

What Works in Hunting Season

The film moves quickly. At 100 minutes, it avoids padding and keeps the pressure on once the trouble starts.

The isolated setting does a lot of work. A cabin, a river and a stretch of wilderness give the story a natural sense of danger, because help is far away and the characters know it.

• Clear stakes: the family must protect a stranger and themselves.

• Tense pacing: the action arrives in bursts rather than one long noisy stretch.

• A grounded tone: it plays the violence as costly, not cartoonish.

Fans of action movie reviews will find plenty here that feels familiar in a good way. It is also a close cousin of the crime movie reviews we cover, thanks to its focus on a ruthless villain.

Hunting Season Cast and Performances

The Hunting Season cast is led by Mel Gibson, who plays Bowdrie with a weathered, wary intensity. He suits the role of a man who has spent years avoiding people, and he does not need many words to show it.

Sofia Hublitz plays Tag, his daughter. She gives the film its emotional anchor, and her scenes with Gibson add warmth to an otherwise hard-edged story.

Shelley Hennig is January, the wounded woman, and she keeps her mysterious. Jordi Mollà plays Alejandro, the brutal criminal, and he brings menace to the screen. A.J. Buckley appears as Davenport, and James DuMont plays Sheriff Brake.

Where Hunting Season Stumbles

The story is familiar. If you have seen a few survival thrillers or revenge tales, you will recognise several beats, and the film rarely tries to subvert them.

Some supporting characters feel thin as well. Their motives are sketched rather than explored, so a few scenes lean on genre habit instead of surprise.

The budget also seems modest. Collins keeps things efficient, but this is not a film with big set pieces or a lot of visual flash.

Is Hunting Season Worth Watching?

Yes, if you want a compact, no-nonsense thriller with a strong lead. Hunting Season does not reinvent the genre, but it delivers tension, a clear villain and a committed Mel Gibson performance.

The TMDB audience score of 7.4 out of 10 from 483 votes suggests viewers have warmed to it, and our rating matches that. It is a solid pick for a night when you want something direct. The film's US release date was 5 December 2025.
