How we rate moviesIn this article
This Thammudu review starts with a simple question: can a sibling drama survive an action template that feels very familiar? Directed and written by Venu Sriram, the Telugu film stars Nithiin as a troubled man who must stand by his sister. It arrived in theatres on 4 July 2025 and drew mostly mixed-to-negative reactions.
The film mixes emotion with fists, and the balance is where it struggles. Here is a closer look at what it attempts and how far it gets.
Thammudu Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)
The Thammudu plot is built on a family bond. Jai, played by Nithiin, is a troubled man who reunites with his sister to protect her and a group of villagers from the brutal plans of a violent criminal businessman. The emotional core is the broken understanding between the siblings and the slow work of repairing it.
The wider story is set around a deadly factory blast in Vizag. An honest officer refuses to back down under pressure from the factory owner, which puts the villagers in danger and pulls Jai into the fight.
That is as far as we will go. The first act sets up the stakes clearly, even if the beats will feel familiar to anyone who watches Telugu action dramas.
What Works in Thammudu
The strongest part of the film is how it looks. Several critics praised the cinematography of the tribal locations by K.V. Guhan, and the landscapes give the story a texture that the script rarely matches.
Ajaneesh Loknath's background score is the other bright spot. It adds weight to the action scenes and pushes the emotional moments harder than the writing does.
Visuals: Natural, earthy settings that feel distinct from the usual factory-and-city backdrops.
Background music: A driving score that lifts the fight sequences.
Action: Nithiin comes across well in the set pieces, according to at least one reviewer.
If you come for the Thammudu action, you will find a few sequences that deliver the energy the story promises.
Thammudu Cast and Performances
The Thammudu cast is led by Nithiin as Jai, with Sapthami Gowda as Ratna and Laya as Jhansi Kiranmayee IAS. Varsha Bollamma plays Chitra, Swasika appears as Gutti, and Saurabh Sachdeva rounds out the main players.
Nithiin puts in effort, particularly when the film turns physical. The trouble is that his role is thinly written, so the performance has little to build on between fights.
Laya brings authority to the officer role, which suits the film's idea of a person of integrity under pressure. Reviewers noted, however, that the lead characters are underdeveloped overall, which limits what the supporting cast can do.
Where Thammudu Stumbles
The screenplay is the main problem. Critics repeatedly called it weak, slow and predictable, and the melodrama often feels dated. Gulte rated the film 2/5 and called the story outdated, while 123Telugu gave it 2.5/5 and described it as half-baked.
Pacing and Runtime
At 151 minutes, the film has room to breathe, but it spends that time on repetitive emotional beats. The sibling drama should be the heart of the story, yet it is stretched thin, and the action arrives in chunks that do not always grow out of the characters.
Uneven Tone
The movie wants to be a tender family story and a hard-hitting action drama at once. The shifts between those moods can feel abrupt, and the villain's menace is not matched by a sharp enough script.
Audience scores reflect this. IMDb sits at 3.6/10, and TMDB shows 5.1/10 from only a handful of votes. Wikipedia describes the film as a box-office disaster.
Is Thammudu Worth Watching?
Only if you are a committed fan of Nithiin or of rural-set action dramas. Is Thammudu worth watching for everyone else? The visuals and score are good enough to notice, but the story is too predictable to recommend widely.

Who Will Enjoy Thammudu
Fans of Nithiin who want to see him in an action-heavy role.
Viewers who enjoy sibling-bond stories with a rural backdrop and a loud score.
Telugu cinema watchers who value cinematography and background music over a fresh script.
Pros
- Striking cinematography of tribal locations
- Energetic background score by Ajaneesh Loknath
- Nithiin handles the action sequences well
Cons
- Weak, predictable screenplay
- Slow pacing across a 151-minute runtime
- Underdeveloped lead characters
Our Verdict
Thammudu has handsome visuals and a lively score, but a dated, slow script keeps its sibling drama from landing. Worth a look mainly for Nithiin's fans.
