The Real Monkey King: Bufashan (Zhen Jia Meihouwang: Bufashan) (2025) Review: A Monkey King Tale Without Magic

This The Real Monkey King: Bufashan review covers a 2025 Chinese action adventure that borrows from Journey to the West but changes the rules. Directed by Sean Xiao Liu, it trades endless magic battles for a closed-room guessing game. Reliable information on the film is thin, so we stick to what the databases confirm.

The Real Monkey King: Bufashan Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)

The plot, as described by TMDB, is set at a strange inn on Bufa Mountain. No one inside can use magic. Travellers arrive, some from the Western Regions, and nearly all of them are hiding something.

The setup resembles a "werewolf game", the party game where players conceal their roles and guess who is lying. Even the monk's party keeps its identities secret. That is a smart twist on a story most viewers already know.

One caution: some promotional text online describes an impostor hero and memory manipulation. We could not confirm that against any reliable source, so we have not built this review on it.

What Works in The Real Monkey King: Bufashan

The best idea is the premise itself. Stripping magic from a legend defined by magic forces the characters to rely on wits, bluffing and fighting skill. It gives the familiar tale a fresh angle.

The film is also short. At about 96 minutes, it should move briskly and avoid the bloat that weighs down many fantasy epics.

A few strengths stand out on paper:

• A contained location that suits a mystery structure.

• A well-known cast of mythic figures, which gives viewers instant footing.

• A mix of action and intrigue rather than pure spectacle.

Fans of action movie reviews who want something less formulaic may find the hook appealing.

The Real Monkey King: Bufashan Cast and Performances

The top-billed The Real Monkey King: Bufashan cast on TMDB includes Chen Long, Nan Sheng, Yan Jie, 南伏龙 and Gong Haibin. The sources we found do not list which actor plays which role, so we will not guess at specific performances.

A social-deduction story lives or dies on its ensemble. Every actor needs to project warmth and menace in equal measure so the audience cannot easily tell friend from foe. That is a tall order, and it is the first thing viewers should watch for.

Sean Xiao Liu directs from a screenplay by Da Wei. For background details, see the TMDB page for the film.

Where The Real Monkey King: Bufashan Stumbles

The main risk is the one that always haunts this kind of story. A tale built on secrets needs tight plotting, and a rushed script can leave the clues feeling arbitrary. A 96-minute runtime leaves little room for a large cast to develop.

There is also the matter of expectations. Viewers who come for the usual flying, shape-shifting Monkey King spectacle may feel shortchanged in a world where magic is banned. The fights will have to carry the excitement.

Finally, we have no critic scores or audience reactions to lean on. Critical reception is unknown at this point, so treat any firm verdict, including ours, as provisional.

Is The Real Monkey King: Bufashan Worth Watching?

It is worth a look if the premise intrigues you, though we would keep expectations moderate. The idea of a Journey to the West mystery in a magic-free inn is original enough to justify 96 minutes.

The film carries an adventure movie label alongside its action roots, and the story promises more cleverness than typical genre fare. Without reviews to confirm that it delivers, it is a curiosity rather than a must-see.

The Real Monkey King: Bufashan release date in China was 29 December 2025. We could not confirm where to watch it outside China.
