This The Run review covers a small Australian sci-fi action film with a big human question at its centre. Writer-director Stephen de Villiers sets a weary smuggler against a world that has stopped having children. It premiered at the 2025 Adelaide Film Festival and reaches wider audiences in 2026.

The Run Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)

The Run takes place in 2036, in an Australia reshaped by another pandemic and a global fertility crisis. Babies are rare, and that rarity has made the world harsher. Mac (Callan Mulvey) is an aging smuggler who works for brutal employers and wants to finish one more delivery.

Then his job collides with a runaway teenager named Aliah (Charlotte Maggi) and her newborn baby. Criminals are hunting them, and Mac has to choose between his run and the people suddenly in his care. That is the whole setup, and the film wisely keeps its focus on that tension.

The tagline, "We run, as long as we have to," fits the movie's relentless forward motion. This is a chase film at heart, and the dystopian backdrop gives the chase some weight. If you like Sci-Fi movie reviews, the premise will feel familiar but still appealing.

What Works in The Run

The action is the film's most dependable strength. The Scoop, which gave it three and a half stars, called the action sequences solid, and that matches the grounded, physical style on show. The fights and pursuits feel scrappy rather than polished, which suits a story about a tired man.

The emotional core also lands. Scenestr compared the mood to Children of Men and praised the unexpected sense of hope that grows out of the bleakness. The film does not reach that classic's heights, but the idea of protecting a newborn in a childless world gives the violence a purpose.

The setting helps too. De Villiers does not drown the film in exposition. The fertility crisis shapes the characters' choices and fears, and the story trusts you to catch on quickly.

The Run Cast and Performances

The The Run cast is led by Callan Mulvey, who plays Mac as a worn-down man with little left to lose. Glam Adelaide found that the cast deliver strong performances, and Mulvey's quiet physicality is a big reason. He sells both the fatigue and the stubborn decency under it.

Charlotte Maggi plays Aliah, the runaway teenager, and her scenes with Mulvey carry much of the heart. The wider ensemble includes:

  • Felix Cameron as Tom

  • Taylor Wiese as Damien

  • Tim Phillipps as Smiley

  • Joe Romeo as Unit

The supporting players fill out the criminal underworld that keeps closing in. The film belongs mostly to its leads, though.

Where The Run Stumbles

The biggest problem is familiarity. Glam Adelaide noted that the script does not stray far from other efforts in this genre, and the beats of the "gruff loner protects a child" story are easy to predict. If you have seen a few of these, little will surprise you.

Pacing is the second issue. Kevin's Film Reviews suggested the film would have benefited from being closer to 90 minutes, and the middle can sag. Runtimes vary between sources, but at 107 minutes it still feels a touch long for such a simple chase.

Reception is mixed. The Book, The Film, The T-Shirt gave it 3/10, while other critics were warmer. Audience scores are too few to draw conclusions, with a TMDB average of 6/10 from only six votes.

Is The Run Worth Watching?

Yes, if you want a modest, heartfelt dystopian action film and can forgive a predictable script. It will not rewrite the genre, but it offers solid action and a sincere emotional centre. That puts it a notch above many low-budget peers.

The Action movie reviews on this site cover plenty of louder options. This one is quieter and more human, with a strong lead performance. For more on the film's background, see its Flicks page.

The Australian rating is MA 15+ for strong themes, science fiction themes and coarse language. The The Run release date is listed as 14 May 2026. I found no confirmed streaming details, so check local listings for where to watch.

Who Will Enjoy The Run

  • Fans of grounded dystopian sci-fi in the vein of Children of Men.

  • Viewers who like gritty, character-led action over big spectacle.

  • Anyone curious about homegrown Australian genre filmmaking.

If you want fresh ideas or tight pacing, you may find it too familiar. If you want heart and a decent chase, it is worth the time. Our Jetlee review offers a different kind of action pick.

Pros

  • Solid, physical action sequences
  • Strong lead work from Callan Mulvey
  • Genuine emotional core and sense of hope
  • Effective near-future Australian setting

Cons

  • Predictable, familiar story beats
  • Pacing sags in the middle
  • Runs longer than the thin plot needs

Our Verdict

The Run is a modest but sincere dystopian chase film, lifted by Callan Mulvey and a hopeful heart. A familiar script and slack pacing keep it from standing out.
