How we rate moviesIn this article
This turbulence review starts with a simple question: can a hot air balloon sustain a whole thriller? Claudio Fäh's 91-minute survival story over the Italian Dolomites tries, and it gets some lift from its premise. It never quite reaches the heights it promises.
Turbulence Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)
The Turbulence plot begins with a young married couple, Zach and Emmy, who book a balloon trip across the Dolomites. They hope the scenery will rekindle their strained relationship. Their pilot, Harry, keeps things friendly and calm on the ground.
Then a third passenger, Julia, joins the basket. The mood shifts, and what should be a romantic getaway turns into a tense situation about five thousand meters up. The film keeps its details close, and so will we.
Andy Mayson's script leans on a classic setup: a small group, a confined space and nowhere to run. It belongs to the same family as other adventure movie reviews we cover, where location does much of the work.
What Works in Turbulence
The setting is the biggest draw. Mountain peaks, thin air and a fragile basket give the film a clear visual identity, and the high-altitude imagery sells the sense of exposure.
A tidy premise: Few characters, one location and an easy-to-grasp danger.
Brisk pacing: At 91 minutes, it rarely overstays its welcome.
A few solid thrills: Some sequences generate real suspense when the weather and the passengers turn on each other.
Fäh keeps the story moving, and the R rating gives the film room for some rougher edges than a typical popcorn adventure.
Turbulence Cast and Performances
The Turbulence cast is led by Jeremy Irvine as Zach and Hera Hilmar as Emmy, the couple at the centre of the trip. Olga Kurylenko plays Julia, the late arrival whose presence unsettles the group. Kelsey Grammer is Harry, the pilot, with Lionel Robert Blanc and Stuart Whelan in supporting roles.
Grammer brings a warm, familiar presence, though some viewers find his turn stiff. Irvine and Hilmar work hard to sell a marriage in trouble, and Kurylenko adds a sharp edge. The performances are serviceable, but the script gives them little to build on.
Where Turbulence Stumbles
The biggest issue is character. Audience reviews repeatedly call the leads unlikable, and that makes it hard to root for anyone once the danger arrives. A survival thriller depends on caring who makes it down.
Tension is the second problem. The film builds suspense, but not always soundly, and some late character reveals feel abrupt. Comparisons to the vertigo-driven thriller Fall are unflattering, since this film feels thinner despite a bigger cast.
It also has modest ambitions. If you want a sharp thriller, browse our thriller movie reviews instead, as this one is more of a pleasant-enough diversion.
Is Turbulence Worth Watching?
Turbulence is worth watching only if you like small-scale survival thrillers and can forgive weak characters. It earns a middling 6.4/10 from us, and audience scores sit in a similar range.
The scenery and compact runtime make it an easy watch. But the story does not build the dread or emotional stakes that would make it memorable. Expect decent thrills, not a standout.
If you are curious about the director's other work or want the full credits, the Turbulence page on IMDb has the details. The Turbulence release date was 26 November 2025.
Who Will Enjoy Turbulence
Fans of confined, one-location survival thrillers who want a quick watch.
Viewers who like action movie reviews with a dash of scenic adventure.
Anyone curious to see Kelsey Grammer and Olga Kurylenko in a pulpy, high-altitude setting.
Pros
- Striking mountain setting
- Tight 91-minute runtime
- Simple, workable premise
- Some effective suspense moments
Cons
- Unlikable main characters
- Tension builds unevenly
- Abrupt late character reveals
Our Verdict
Turbulence has a gorgeous setting and a neat premise, but unlikable characters and uneven tension keep it grounded. It is a passable thriller rather than a must-see.
