Ustaad Bhagat Singh (2026) Review: A Mass Hero Vehicle Built On Old Formula

This Ustaad Bhagat Singh review starts with a simple point: the film is built for Pawan Kalyan's fans, and it knows exactly who it is playing to. Directed by Harish Shankar, this Telugu action comedy mixes punchy dialogue, star moments and political messaging. Critics were split, and the result is a crowd-pleaser with limits.

Ustaad Bhagat Singh Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)

The Ustaad Bhagat Singh plot begins with a tribal boy whose teacher gives him the name Bhagat Singh. The lessons that come with that name shape him into a man of firm morals. Those values guide every choice he makes as he grows up.

As an adult, Bhagat Singh is a fearless cop who refuses to look away from injustice. He takes on a corrupt politician and the politician's heir, two figures with power and money on their side. The setup is familiar, and the film is open about borrowing from the mass-hero playbook.

The tagline promises that "this time it's not just entertainment." That signals a heavier dose of political commentary than you might expect from an action comedy.

What Works in Ustaad Bhagat Singh

The biggest asset is the star. Reviewers consistently single out Pawan Kalyan as being in good form, and he plays to the gallery with obvious confidence. His sarcastic smile and sharp one-liners give the film its best moments.

Harish Shankar's writing also earns credit. At least one critic noted that the dialogue leaves a mark, and the film leans on punchy lines to land its heroics. When the humor and swagger click, the film is lively.

The mix of genres helps too. Fans of action movie reviews will find the hero entrances and confrontations they expect. Those who prefer comedy movie reviews get a steady supply of banter to break up the fights.

Ustaad Bhagat Singh Cast and Performances

The Ustaad Bhagat Singh cast is led by Pawan Kalyan as Bhagat Singh. Sreeleela plays RJ Leela and Raashii Khanna plays Shloka, the two female leads. R. Parthiban appears as Nalla Nagappa, Nawab Shah plays Ajmal Rahim and Avinash plays Miya Bhai.

Pawan Kalyan

Kalyan is the engine of the film. He sells both the comic beats and the righteous anger, and the script gives him plenty of room to do so.

Supporting players

The supporting cast is solid, with R. Parthiban a welcome presence. Still, reviews point to a weak villain, which leaves the antagonists feeling less threatening than the hero's speeches suggest.

Where Ustaad Bhagat Singh Stumbles

The most common complaint is that the film recycles old formula. The Hindu described it as a rehash weighed down by verbose political messaging. The Indian Express was harsher, giving it 1.5 out of 5 and saying that non-fans will find their patience tested.

The storyline is predictable, and the first half stretches longer than it should. A weak antagonist removes much of the tension, since the hero never seems seriously threatened. At around 150 minutes, the length magnifies each of these flaws.

The reception reflects this. Wikipedia describes the response as mixed from critics and audiences alike, and notes it was Harish Shankar's second consecutive commercial failure. Aggregate numbers vary: Nettv4u lists a critics' rating of 2.75 out of 5 and an audience rating of 3.53 out of 5.

Is Ustaad Bhagat Singh Worth Watching?

It is worth watching if you are a Pawan Kalyan fan, and a harder sell if you are not. The star power and sharp dialogue deliver for believers, but the formula is worn and the villain is thin. Casual viewers may find it a long sit.

The Ustaad Bhagat Singh release date was 18 March 2026, and the film is in Telugu. Its runtime is listed as 151 minutes in our data, though other sources give 154.
