This Vaa Vaathiyaar review starts with the film's best asset: a playful idea. Nalan Kumarasamy's Tamil action comedy, released on 14 January 2026 for Pongal, turns fan devotion into a family conflict and gives Karthi a double-edged role to play.

The pitch is bright and the star is committed. The script, sadly, cannot keep up with either.

Vaa Vaathiyaar Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)

The Vaa Vaathiyaar plot rests on a simple but charming setup. A die-hard admirer of MGR, the iconic actor, raises his grandson as the star's reincarnation. He expects the boy to grow into the hero he worships.

That is not how things turn out. Ramu, played by Karthi, becomes a cynical and corrupt adult who is far from the noble screen idol. The tension between grandfather and grandson drives the comedy, and the film layers in action and some fantasy touches as it goes.

Nalan Kumarasamy wrote and directed, and he clearly enjoys the fan-culture angle. The first act sets up the clash quickly and keeps the tone light.

What Works in Vaa Vaathiyaar

The central concept is the film's biggest strength. Critics have called it fresh, and it is easy to see why: few mainstream comedies build a story around a man trying to mould a child into a cinema legend.

  • A strong comic premise: The gap between the idol and the real person gives the film steady room for jokes.

  • Karthi's dual energy: He plays a world-weary schemer and a hero in the MGR mould, and he separates the two with real precision.

  • A festival-ready mix: Action, comedy and a dash of fantasy suit a Pongal release and aim for broad appeal.

At 129 minutes, the film also avoids dragging for long stretches. It stays brisk, even when the material thins out.

Vaa Vaathiyaar Cast and Performances

The Vaa Vaathiyaar cast is led by Karthi as Rameshwaran "Ramu". Reviews consistently single him out, and he is the reason the film holds together. He sells both the cynical streak and the heroic swagger without letting either feel like a caricature.

Sathyaraj plays Periyasamy and Rajkiran appears as Jaiganesh. Anandaraj features as an MGR fan, which suits the film's theme, and Shilpa Manjunath plays Malini. These are experienced performers and they add texture to the supporting scenes.

Krithi Shetty plays Wu, but the role is underwritten. Critics note that she is often pushed into the protagonist's shadow, and the film gives her little to build on.

Where Vaa Vaathiyaar Stumbles

The main problem is the writing. After a promising start, the story turns shallow, and the humour gets louder rather than sharper. Pinkvilla described the result as loud, corny and forgettable, and that matches the film's weaker stretches.

The idea of a grandson who refuses to live up to a legend could carry real emotional weight. Here it mostly serves as a setup for broad set pieces. The family conflict never gets the depth it deserves.

The female lead is another miss. A talented actor is left with little to do, which is a waste in an already thin script. The film was also a box-office disappointment, and its audience scores are low: IMDb sits around 4.5 out of 10.

Is Vaa Vaathiyaar Worth Watching?

It is worth watching mainly for Karthi and the premise, but expect a lopsided experience. Critical reception has been mixed to negative, with scores ranging from 2 out of 5 at Pinkvilla to 3 out of 5 at the Times of India.

If you enjoy Tamil star vehicles and can forgive loose writing, there is fun to be had. If you want a tightly constructed comedy, you may be frustrated by how quickly the film runs out of ideas.

Who Will Enjoy Vaa Vaathiyaar

  • Karthi fans who want to see him play two contrasting sides of one character.

  • Viewers who love MGR-era nostalgia and fan-culture humour.

  • Audiences looking for a light, loud Pongal-style action comedy and willing to overlook uneven writing.

Pros

  • Fresh, funny premise
  • Karthi's sharp dual performance
  • Brisk 129-minute pace
  • Strong veteran supporting cast

Cons

  • Writing turns shallow
  • Krithi Shetty's role is underdeveloped
  • Humour grows loud and corny

Our Verdict

Karthi's committed performance and a clever MGR-fan premise make this watchable, but the thin script wastes its potential. A mixed bag best enjoyed with modest expectations.
