How we rate moviesIn this article
This Verity review starts with a simple question: can a great cast carry a thriller that rarely surprises? Michael Showalter's adaptation of the bestselling novel has the glossy look, the moody house and the star power. What it lacks is the nerve-jangling tension its premise promises.
Verity Review: The Story So Far (No Spoilers)
The Verity plot begins with Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson), a writer whose career is going nowhere. After a quiet book signing, she is offered a lucrative job: complete the remaining titles in a bestselling series by Verity Crawford (Anne Hathaway), who cannot work after being badly hurt. Verity's husband Jeremy (Josh Hartnett) persuades Lowen to accept and to stay at the family's remote, luxurious home.
There, Lowen goes digging through Verity's papers for material and finds autobiographical notes that were never meant to be seen. The more she reads, the more she wonders what happened in this household, and whether she is safe in it. That is the setup, and the film is careful to keep its hooks in the early stretches.
If you like mystery movie reviews built around secrets in a big house, the premise will feel inviting. Writer Nick Antosca adapts the material with a clear eye for atmosphere.
What Works in Verity
The film looks good. The isolated Montana home is cold, polished and a little unnerving, a fine setting for a story about hidden truths. Showalter keeps the mood restrained and elegant, even when the script turns pulpy.
The central idea is also a strong one. A manuscript that may be confession, fiction or manipulation gives the film a pleasing sense of unreliability. For a while, you are happily guessing which pages to trust.
The film also commits to its melodrama. It does not wink at the audience or apologize for its heightened tone, which keeps it watchable even when the writing wobbles.
Verity Cast and Performances
The Verity cast is the main reason to buy a ticket. Dakota Johnson plays Lowen with quiet curiosity and a growing, uneasy fixation, and she anchors the film even when the pacing sags. Some viewers have singled out her screen presence as the glue holding the story together.
Anne Hathaway is the standout. Critics have described her as operating a league above everyone else, and she gives the title role a dangerous, unpredictable energy. Josh Hartnett adds a warm but slippery presence as Jeremy, the husband who may or may not be what he seems.
The supporting players include Brady Wagner as Crew Crawford, Ismael Cruz Cordova as Corey and Irina Dvorovenko as Anna. They have less to do, but the main trio supplies plenty of heat.
Where Verity Stumbles
The biggest problem is predictability. The twists will feel familiar if you have seen other page-turner adaptations in the thriller movie reviews archive, and few of the reveals land with real force. Tension is promised more often than it is delivered.
Pacing is another issue. At 117 minutes, several scenes stall and then end exactly where you expected. Some critics also found the erotic and trashy elements underpowered, so the film rarely becomes the steamy, dark psychological thriller its marketing suggests.
Reception has been mixed. The TMDB audience score sits at 6.8 out of 10 from 446 votes, while individual reviews range from a harsh 3 to a warm 7. That spread tells you it is a film people respond to very differently.
Is Verity Worth Watching?
Yes, Verity is worth watching if you come for the performances and the atmosphere rather than for fresh surprises. Hathaway alone makes it an enjoyable ride, and Johnson and Hartnett hold up their share.
If you need a tight, shocking thriller, you may feel let down. Think of it as a polished, slightly soapy mystery that entertains more than it unsettles. For a similar mood of danger and secrets, you could also try Affinity (2025) Review: Fists, Fear, and a Missing Woman, though the tone there is far more physical.
