Synopsis

Based on Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin's biography American Prometheus, Oppenheimer follows the physicist from his restless student years through his leadership of the Manhattan Project at Los Alamos, and into the 1954 security hearing that stripped him of his clearance.

Structure as suspense

Nolan cuts between a color, subjective strand told from Oppenheimer's point of view and a black-and-white strand centered on Lewis Strauss. The result turns committee rooms into battlegrounds, and the Trinity test sequence is a masterclass in sound, silence and dread.

Performances

Cillian Murphy plays Oppenheimer as a man whose brilliance and self-deception are inseparable; so much of the performance lives in his eyes. Robert Downey Jr. is outstanding as Strauss, and Emily Blunt makes a late scene as Kitty one of the film's sharpest moments.

Where it stumbles

At three hours and wall-to-wall with names and dates, the first act can feel overwhelming, and the women in Oppenheimer's life are drawn more thinly than the men around him.

Who will enjoy it

  • History and science enthusiasts

  • Fans of Christopher Nolan's puzzle-box storytelling

  • Anyone who appreciates actor-driven dramas

Pros

  • Cillian Murphy's commanding, interior performance
  • Ludwig Göransson's relentless score
  • Braided timelines that build genuine suspense
  • A deep supporting cast led by Robert Downey Jr.

Cons

  • Dense dialogue rewards — and sometimes demands — close attention
  • Female characters are given limited space

Our Verdict

Oppenheimer is a towering achievement: a biography that refuses easy answers and a technical marvel that never forgets the man at its center.
